Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Friday announced that his government will introduce a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill during the Monsoon Session of the state Assembly, beginning July 20. He said the proposed law would recognise only monogamous marriages and would apply to people belonging to all religions.
Addressing a gathering after inaugurating newly constructed Sandipani Schools at Jhinjhri and Bahoriband in Katni district, Yadav said that under the proposed UCC framework, only individuals having one marriage would have the right to reside in Madhya Pradesh. He described the move as part of the state government’s effort to establish a common legal framework for citizens.
Yadav said the UCC would be introduced during the upcoming Assembly session, which is scheduled from July 20 to July 25. He stated that the legislation would be applicable irrespective of religion and linked the initiative with the broader principle of “one nation, one Constitution, one flag and one law.” The BJP-led state government is expected to present the Bill during the session.

The Madhya Pradesh government had earlier formed a committee to prepare the draft of the proposed law. According to officials, the committee has submitted its report, which will serve as the basis for the legislation. If approved by the Assembly, Madhya Pradesh would become the second state after Uttarakhand to implement a Uniform Civil Code.
The announcement carries political significance as the Uniform Civil Code has remained a major issue on the agenda of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The party has consistently supported a common civil law for citizens and included its implementation among key commitments in its election manifestos.
During his visit to Katni, the Chief Minister also inaugurated two Sandipani Schools and interacted with students. He highlighted the importance of education, cultural values and development initiatives while reiterating that the state government would move ahead with its plan to introduce the UCC during the forthcoming Assembly session.
