Mumbai's Central Railway (CR) has expanded its fleet of air-conditioned suburban services by converting 12 existing non-AC local trains into AC locals from Monday, June 29, in a move aimed at improving passenger comfort during the monsoon season. With the latest addition, the total number of AC local services on the Central Railway network has increased to 120, comprising 92 services on the Main line and 28 on the Harbour line. The decision follows sustained demand from commuters for more air-conditioned suburban train services across the city's busy rail network.
The newly introduced AC services have replaced existing non-air-conditioned trains, ensuring that the total number of weekday suburban services across the Mumbai Division remains unchanged at 1,820. Central Railway said the conversion has been carried out without affecting the overall frequency of local train operations, allowing passengers to benefit from enhanced travel comfort while maintaining the existing timetable.
Among the 12 upgraded services are three peak-hour trains that cater to office commuters. These include the 6.46 am Titwala–Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) local, the 9.16 am Ghatkopar–CSMT local and the 7.18 pm CSMT–Kalyan service. The remaining nine AC locals have been distributed across late morning, afternoon, evening and night hours, extending the availability of air-conditioned travel beyond traditional peak periods. Additional upgraded services will operate on routes connecting Kurla and CSMT, Thane and CSMT, and Kalyan and Kurla.

Central Railway clarified that the upgraded AC rakes will operate only from Monday to Saturday. On Sundays and nominated public holidays, the same services will continue to run with non-AC coaches. The arrangement is intended to optimise the utilisation of the available AC rolling stock while ensuring uninterrupted suburban operations throughout the week.
Mumbai's suburban railway network is among the busiest in the world, carrying millions of passengers every day. Demand for AC local trains has steadily increased in recent years as commuters seek greater comfort, particularly during periods of extreme heat and heavy monsoon rainfall. Since the introduction of AC locals, Central Railway and Western Railway have gradually expanded the number of services in response to rising ridership and positive passenger feedback.
The addition of 12 more AC local trains marks another step in Central Railway's efforts to modernise Mumbai's suburban transport system while enhancing the daily commuting experience. Authorities expect the expanded AC network to provide greater convenience for passengers across multiple time slots, offering a more comfortable travel option without reducing the overall availability of suburban train services.
