A shocking hit-and-run incident involving a senior Kerala police officer has rocked Thiruvananthapuram, with the Station House Officer (SHO) of Prassala police station, P Anil Kumar, facing imminent suspension and disciplinary action for his alleged role in the death of a 59-year-old man. The tragic event, which occurred on September 7, 2025, at Kilimanoor, has drawn widespread condemnation and intensified scrutiny on police accountability.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), between 4 am and 6 am, a blue Maruti Alto car struck Rajan at Irattachira near Kilimanoor. The driver fled, leaving the critically injured victim on the roadside for over an hour. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, Rajan succumbed to his injuries.
CCTV footage later revealed the vehicle belonged to Kumar, with toll plaza recordings confirming he was driving at the time of the incident. In an attempt to evade detection, Kumar allegedly moved his car to a workshop in Neyyattinkara, but police recovered it, solidifying evidence against him.
The Thiruvananthapuram Rural Police Chief conducted a swift internal inquiry, submitting a damning report to the Thiruvananthapuram Range Deputy Inspector General (DIG). The report was escalated to the South Zone Inspector General (IG), who confirmed that disciplinary measures, including Kumar’s suspension, are forthcoming. “The report has been received, and further action will follow,” stated the South Zone IG’s office. Kilimanoor police are awaiting clearance from higher authorities to summon and formally arrest Kumar, who returned to Thiruvananthapuram from Bengaluru on Monday, where he had been on an investigative assignment.

The case has been registered under sections 281 and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for rash driving and causing death by negligence, alongside sections 134(A) and 134(B) of the Kerala Police Act for professional misconduct. A police official noted, “The officer has not yet provided an explanation. A report will be filed before the court, arraigning him as an accused.”
The incident has sparked outrage among residents, with many questioning how a senior officer could abandon a victim in distress. Social media platforms have been abuzz with demands for justice, amplifying calls for stricter oversight within the police force. Rajan’s family, devastated by the loss, awaits answers as the investigation unfolds. This case not only highlights the need for accountability among law enforcement but also underscores the broader issue of road safety in Kerala, where hit-and-run incidents continue to claim lives.
