Brazil has strongly rejected recent US threats against Cuba, urging that tensions be resolved through diplomacy and full respect for international law, according to remarks made by Brazilian Foreign Affairs Minister Mauro Vieira. The statement comes amid rising geopolitical friction involving the United States and Cuba, with concerns growing in Latin America over the possibility of military escalation in the region.
Vieira said on Monday that Brazil does not support any form of foreign threat against Cuba and hopes that the situation does not develop into military action. He emphasized that negotiation and dialogue remain the only viable paths forward, adding that differences between countries should be addressed through diplomatic channels rather than coercion or force.
The remarks reflect Brazil’s broader foreign policy position under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who has consistently advocated for sovereignty, multilateral dialogue, and non-intervention in regional affairs. Vieira noted that Lula had previously raised the issue of Cuban sovereignty during discussions in Washington, reinforcing Brazil’s call for balance and stability in the Western Hemisphere.

Brazilian officials stressed that Latin America should remain a “zone of peace,” warning that escalating rhetoric or military posturing risks destabilizing the region. Vieira reiterated that cooperation and dialogue among nations are essential to avoiding heightened geopolitical tensions and preserving regional stability.
The comments also come against the backdrop of renewed exchanges between Havana and Washington. Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has accused the United States of using “empty rhetoric” and unfounded claims to justify pressure on Cuba, including allegations related to terrorism. He has rejected such accusations and described them as part of a broader narrative aimed at increasing political and economic pressure on the island nation.
Díaz-Canel has further argued that Cuba has consistently sought peaceful coexistence since its revolution, while accusing successive US administrations of maintaining policies of hostility. As diplomatic tensions continue, regional actors like Brazil are increasingly positioning themselves as advocates for dialogue, calling on all parties to avoid actions that could escalate into open conflict and instead prioritize negotiated solutions.
