The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a scathing attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday, accusing him of clinging to an “Emergency mindset” for alleging a government-orchestrated witch-hunt against his brother-in-law, Robert Vadra. The criticism follows Gandhi’s remarks after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a chargesheet against Vadra in a money-laundering case tied to alleged irregularities in a land deal in Haryana’s Shikohpur.
BJP national spokesperson Tuhin Sinha, addressing a press conference at the party’s headquarters, claimed Gandhi’s comments suggest he is “fully aware” of Vadra’s “dark deeds” and may even be complicit. Sinha further slammed Gandhi for his recent remarks against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of threatening to jail an elected leader without evidence. “Will you just pick up someone and put them in jail?” Sinha challenged.
Sinha alleged that Gandhi’s statements reflect Congress’s disregard for the judicial process and investigation, harking back to the 1975 Emergency under Indira Gandhi. “Congress still believes in manipulating the system as it did 50 years ago,” he said. Gandhi’s recent claim at a party meeting in Assam’s Chaygaon, where he vowed that Sarma would face jail for corruption, further fueled the BJP’s ire, with Sinha defending Sarma as an elected leader with no allegations against him.
