A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator has called for renaming the national capital from Delhi to Indraprastha, citing historical and cultural significance. The MLA argued that the change would honor the city’s ancient roots as the legendary capital of the Pandavas in the Mahabharata, linking modern Delhi to its mythological past.
The proposal was raised during a session in the Delhi Legislative Assembly, where the BJP MLA emphasized that renaming Delhi could reinforce local identity and pride. According to the legislator, Indraprastha represents the city’s original name, reflecting centuries-old heritage that predates the Mughal and colonial periods.
While the demand has generated discussion among political circles, it has also drawn attention from historians and urban planners, some of whom caution that renaming a city with a global profile like Delhi could involve complex administrative, legal, and logistical challenges. These include updating government records, maps, signage, and official documents, potentially costing significant public funds.

Opposition leaders in the Delhi Assembly have expressed skepticism over the proposal, describing it as politically motivated. They argue that such moves may divert attention from pressing urban issues, including infrastructure, pollution, and public services, which continue to affect residents across the capital.
Renaming cities for historical or cultural reasons is not unprecedented in India. Cities such as Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai underwent official name changes in recent decades to reflect local heritage. Proponents of the Delhi-to-Indraprastha change say it would follow a similar pattern, asserting that reconnecting with historical identity can foster civic pride.
As of now, the proposal remains a demand rather than an official government initiative. Lawmakers and administrators will need to deliberate on its feasibility, public reception, and potential impact before any formal action can be taken.
