A political battle has erupted between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab over allegations of a paper leak, with the BJP demanding the resignation of Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains. The controversy comes shortly after Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned amid pressure over similar allegations, prompting the BJP to question whether the same accountability should apply to the Punjab government. BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari targeted the AAP government, asking when Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains would step down on moral grounds.
He also questioned whether AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal would demand the resignation of Punjab's education minister over the issue. The BJP has sought to draw parallels between the developments at the Centre and the situation in Punjab, accusing the AAP government of adopting different standards on accountability. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, however, rejected the allegations of any major paper leak during his government's tenure. He said that there had been no paper leak in the state over the last four and a half years, while acknowledging that attempts at cheating had taken place at two locations during examinations. Mann maintained that isolated incidents of malpractice should not be described as systemic failures.
The Punjab government has defended its handling of examination-related issues, stating that strict measures are being taken to prevent unfair practices. Officials have emphasised the use of monitoring mechanisms and security arrangements during examinations to ensure transparency and maintain public confidence in the education system. The BJP's attack comes amid a wider political debate over examination integrity and alleged irregularities in recruitment and entrance tests across the country. Opposition parties have repeatedly raised concerns over paper leaks, accusing governments of failing to protect the interests of students.
