A tragic boat accident at Bargi Dam in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur has left nine people dead and several others missing, with rescue teams continuing intensive search operations even as hope fades for the missing passengers. The cruise boat capsized on the Narmada river following sudden bad weather conditions, including strong winds and choppy waters, leading to panic and chaos among those on board.
Eyewitness accounts describe a terrifying sequence of events as the vessel began taking in water and eventually overturned. One survivor recalled how her family of six was enjoying the cruise when the situation changed abruptly. She described holding her father’s hand as the boat filled with water, while other family members, including her mother, brother, and grandmother, were swept away amid the confusion. She said she managed to find her grandfather but lost sight of other close relatives during the incident.
Among those still missing is the wife, grandson, and sister-in-law of Jabalpur resident Syed Riaz Hussain, who has been anxiously awaiting updates from rescue teams. He stated that nearly 24 hours after the accident, there has been no trace of his family members, raising fears that the death toll may rise further as search operations continue in difficult conditions.

Rescue efforts are being carried out jointly by teams from the Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). Officials have reported that low visibility underwater and strong currents are hampering operations. During the search, the bodies of a woman and her son were recovered, found clinging to each other, highlighting the emotional tragedy of the incident.
Preliminary reports suggest that sudden storm-like conditions may have caused the boat to lose stability. Some eyewitnesses said passengers raised alarms and requested the crew to steer back to shore, but communication issues reportedly delayed response efforts. Locals managed to rescue a few passengers who were wearing life jackets using ropes, preventing a larger loss of life.
Authorities have announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund, while injured victims will receive Rs 50,000. Madhya Pradesh Tourism officials have also confirmed that a detailed investigation will be conducted into the incident, including scrutiny of safety measures such as availability and usage of life jackets on the cruise boat.
