The Ministry of Ayush has announced that the International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026 will be observed with a focus on “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” highlighting yoga as a key tool for promoting longevity, mobility, and preventive healthcare. The theme comes at a time when rising life expectancy and increasing lifestyle-related disorders are placing new demands on public health systems worldwide.
The announcement was made by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav during the “Yoga Mahotsav: 25-Day Countdown to IDY 2026” held at the Khajuraho Group of Monuments. He said the theme reflects the need to adopt healthier ageing practices rooted in India’s traditional knowledge systems, where yoga and discipline have long been associated with longevity and well-being.
Officials from the Ministry of Ayush said the initiative is not just a wellness message but a global health priority in the face of rapidly ageing populations. The theme aims to position yoga as a bridge between lifespan and healthspan, enabling older adults to maintain physical mobility, mental resilience, and social engagement as they age. It also highlights yoga’s role in reducing the burden of chronic lifestyle diseases.

Scientific interest in yoga for ageing has also seen a sharp rise in recent years. Data from PubMed Central shows that research publications on “Yoga for healthy ageing” increased from 183 in 2014 to 1,207 in 2025. Officials noted that this growing body of evidence supports the view that yoga contributes not only to physical fitness but also to cognitive and emotional well-being among the elderly.
The government also linked the theme to the expanding “silver economy,” which focuses on products and services for senior citizens. In India, this sector is estimated at around Rs 73,000 crore and is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. Yoga is being promoted as both a healthcare intervention and a driver of innovation in elder care, wellness services, and rehabilitation solutions.
To support the initiative, the Ministry is implementing several programmes including the “10 Yoga Protocols for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs),” which includes a dedicated module for geriatric care. Other initiatives such as “Yoga 365” and “Yoga Samavesh” aim to promote daily practice and include vulnerable groups through accessible routines like chair-based yoga. Officials said these efforts, along with the SAGE initiative, are designed to integrate yoga into India’s broader ageing and healthcare strategy.
