Ayodhya transformed into a mesmerizing sea of light as the banks of the Saryu River glowed with 26,17,215 diyas during the annual Deepotsav festivities, just ahead of Diwali. This breathtaking display, coupled with a record-breaking 2,128 people performing a grand ‘aarti’ simultaneously, earned two Guinness World Records, as verified by officials using drones to count the lamps. The Uttar Pradesh government proudly announced the achievement, marking another milestone in Ayodhya’s growing legacy as a global spiritual hub.
The celebrations, held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., captivated thousands with a vibrant lineup of events, including a spectacular light and sound show, a dazzling fireworks display, and the iconic ‘aarti’ ceremony. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath led the festivities, personally greeting saints and mahants before performing the ‘aarti’ for artistes dressed as Lord Ram, Mata Sita, and Lakshman. In a symbolic gesture, he also pulled the ‘Pushpak Vimaan,’ a ceremonial chariot carrying the performers, adding a divine touch to the evening.
The event was a massive collaborative effort, with 33,000 volunteers from local colleges and universities meticulously preparing and lighting the diyas across Ram Ki Paidi and 56 ghats. Divisional Commissioner Rajesh Kumar told ANI that preparations were flawless, with rehearsals completed the previous evening and police forces and magistrates deployed to ensure safety and order. “Our volunteers are spread across small sectors, readying the lamps for this historic moment,” Kumar said.

Adding an international flair, artistes from five countries performed Ramlila, a traditional enactment of Lord Ram’s life, which continued late into the night, enthralling attendees. The Uttar Pradesh Department of Tourism, Ayodhya administration, and Rammanohar Lohia Avadh University jointly received the Guinness award for the largest display of oil lamps, while the tourism department, district administration, and Saryu Aarti Samiti were honored for the record-breaking simultaneous ‘aarti.’
This year’s Deepotsav surpassed the previous record, showcasing Ayodhya’s commitment to celebrating Diwali on an unparalleled scale. The event not only highlighted the city’s spiritual significance but also its organizational prowess, drawing global attention to its cultural heritage. As the diyas flickered against the night sky, Ayodhya reaffirmed its place as the heart of India’s festive spirit, leaving an indelible mark on all who witnessed the radiant spectacle.
