The Election Commission of India has announced the full schedule for the 2026 Assembly elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and the Union Territory of Puducherry. Polling across the five regions will take place in April, while the counting of votes for all assemblies will be conducted on May 4, 2026, the poll body said.
The schedule marks the start of a major electoral exercise involving more than 17 crore voters across the states and union territory. Elections are held every five years to choose members of the respective legislative assemblies, which then determine the formation of the state governments.
Polling in Kerala, Assam and Puducherry will take place in a single phase on April 9, 2026. These states will conduct voting across all constituencies on the same day, with election authorities deploying officials and security personnel to ensure a smooth process.

Tamil Nadu will go to the polls on April 23, 2026, also in a single phase. The election will decide all 234 seats in the state assembly, determining which party or coalition forms the next government in the southern state.
Meanwhile, West Bengal will vote in two phases on April 23 and April 29, a significant reduction compared with the eight-phase election held in 2021. The two-phase schedule will cover all 294 assembly constituencies across the state.
After voting concludes, ballots from all states and Puducherry will be counted on May 4, 2026, when the results will determine the new governments in these regions. The elections are expected to be closely watched nationwide, as they will shape the political landscape in several key states ahead of future national contests.
