An Indian Air Force (IAF) AN-32 transport aircraft crashed and caught fire within the premises of the Air Force Station in Jorhat, Assam, on Saturday, prompting an immediate emergency response. According to initial reports, the aircraft went down inside the military base, triggering a blaze that was swiftly attended to by firefighting and rescue teams. Authorities moved quickly to secure the area and assess the extent of the damage caused by the incident.
The Indian Air Force confirmed the crash and stated that emergency personnel were deployed to the site soon after the accident occurred. Officials have not yet disclosed the cause of the crash, and information regarding casualties or injuries remained unavailable at the time of reporting. The force said a detailed assessment is underway and that further updates will be released as more information becomes available.
An investigation has been initiated to determine the circumstances that led to the accident. The AN-32, manufactured by the Soviet Union's Antonov Design Bureau, has long been regarded as one of the Indian Air Force's most dependable transport aircraft. Often referred to as the “workhorse” of the IAF, the twin-engine turboprop aircraft is designed to operate in challenging conditions, including high-altitude airfields and hot tropical climates. The aircraft is capable of carrying up to 7.5 tonnes of cargo, 50 passengers, or 42 paratroopers, making it a crucial asset for military logistics and supply missions.
The crash has once again drawn attention to aviation safety within the armed forces. The incident comes months after an Indian Air Force Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet crashed in Assam's Karbi Anglong district during a routine sortie. In that accident, the aircraft lost communication with ground control shortly after taking off from Jorhat Air Force Station before crashing in a remote hilly region, resulting in the deaths of two pilots.
As investigators continue their work, officials are focusing on determining the exact cause of the AN-32 crash and evaluating any operational implications for the fleet. The Indian Air Force has assured that all necessary measures are being taken to investigate the incident thoroughly. Further details regarding the aircraft, crew members, and the outcome of the inquiry are expected in the coming days.
