Assamese filmmaker არა filmmaker Maharshi Tuhin Kashyap’s debut feature film, Kok Kok Kookkook, has been selected for the Vision Asia section of the 30th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), set to take place from September 17 to 26, 2025, in South Korea. Produced by the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) in Kolkata, this magic realist horror drama marks a significant milestone for both Kashyap and contemporary Assamese cinema, spotlighting the region’s growing global presence.
The film, set in Kashyap’s hometown of Guwahati, Assam, weaves a deeply personal yet universal tale of migrants grappling with identity in a gritty yet visually striking urban landscape. Known for his poetic use of magic realism, Kashyap, a former short filmmaker and SRFTI alumnus, crafted the film as his final dissertation project under the mentorship of acclaimed filmmaker Dominic Sangma.
“This film is dedicated to the people of Assam, who once celebrated diversity without hesitation,” Kashyap stated, expressing concern over changing societal attitudes. He added that the film stands as a “testament of my existence, and of those who fight for identity every day.”
Kok Kok Kookkook’s world premiere at BIFF’s Vision Asia section, which showcases bold and innovative works from emerging Asian filmmakers, underscores its significance.
Kashyap’s short films have previously garnered international acclaim, and this debut feature, featuring regional actors like Raju Roy and Rupjyoti Das, continues his trajectory of pushing creative boundaries. The film’s selection highlights the rising prominence of Assamese cinema on the global stage, following in the footsteps of landmarks like Rima Das’ Village Rockstars.
