The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a dire warning on Tuesday, forecasting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across parts of Andhra Pradesh from August 26 to 30, driven by a persistent low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha’s coast. A red alert has been sounded for districts including Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli, Srikakulam, Alluri Sitarama Raju, Kakinada, Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema, East Godavari, and Yanam, signaling potential rainfall exceeding 20 cm in 24 hours.
The IMD predicts heavy to very heavy rain in North Coastal Andhra Pradesh (NCAP) and Yanam on Tuesday, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning across NCAP, South Coastal Andhra Pradesh (SCAP), and Rayalaseema. Strong winds reaching speeds of 50 kmph are expected in isolated areas of NCAP, Yanam, and SCAP, with gusts up to 40 kmph forecast statewide through August 30. The low-pressure system, observed at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday with cyclonic circulation extending 7.6 km above sea level, is likely to intensify and move west to northwest, exacerbating conditions over the next two days.
Heavy rainfall is expected to persist in NCAP and Yanam through August 27, with thunderstorms and lightning likely across the state until the end of the week. Authorities are urging residents to prepare for potential flooding and disruptions, particularly in low-lying areas. The IMD’s alert underscores the need for vigilance as Andhra Pradesh faces a turbulent weather spell, with the potential for significant impacts on infrastructure and daily life.
