Union Home Minister Amit Shah has written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, saying the government is ready to hold a discussion in Parliament on the ongoing student protests and related issues. In his letter, Shah urged the Speaker to consult the Opposition on when it wants the discussion to take place and allocate as much time as considered appropriate. Shah also said he wanted to be present in the House during the discussion and answer questions raised by Opposition members. Shah referred to Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju’s statement at a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee, where the government had conveyed its willingness to discuss the student agitation and the alleged NEET-UG paper leak.

The home minister’s letter came amid a continuing political confrontation in Parliament, with Opposition parties demanding that the government respond to concerns surrounding student protests and the handling of issues affecting examination candidates. In his letter, Shah also pointed to an earlier discussion in the current session on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026. He said that the discussion had taken place at the request of the Opposition but that no Opposition MP had raised concerns about the NEET examination during that debate. Despite this, Shah said, the government was prepared to discuss the NEET issue again in Parliament.

Shah stressed that he was willing to participate personally in the proposed discussion and respond to questions from Opposition members. He said democratic institutions function through discussion and dialogue and argued that Parliament should provide the forum for resolving disagreements over issues of public concern. His letter sought to signal that the government was not opposed to a debate on the student protests and examination-related concerns. The proposed discussion comes against the backdrop of repeated disruptions in Parliament over the issue.

Opposition parties have been demanding answers from the government over the treatment of protesting students and have sought accountability regarding the authorities’ response to demonstrations. The government, meanwhile, has maintained that it is willing to discuss the matter through parliamentary procedures. By asking Birla to consult the Opposition on the timing and duration of the discussion, Shah left the scheduling of the debate to the Speaker. The home minister said the government was prepared to provide adequate time for the issue to be discussed, while emphasising that he wanted to be present to respond to the questions raised by lawmakers. The letter could provide an opportunity to break the deadlock between the government and the Opposition over the student protests.

Shah’s offer to participate in the discussion and answer questions comes as Opposition parties continue to press for a detailed explanation in Parliament. Whether the proposed debate proceeds will depend on discussions between the Speaker and Opposition leaders and agreement on the parliamentary schedule. Shah reiterated his faith in democratic institutions and said solutions emerge through discussion and dialogue. His outreach to the Speaker therefore places the next step with the Lok Sabha leadership, which will have to coordinate with the Opposition on the timing and format of the proposed debate. The government’s stated readiness to discuss both the student agitation and NEET-related concerns now provides a possible route towards resolving the continuing parliamentary standoff.
