A six-year-old girl’s request to use the lavatory helped set off a chain of events that brought attention to a violent cockpit struggle aboard flydubai Flight FZ1073, after Indian Captain Smit Machchhar was allegedly attacked and stabbed by his co-pilot during a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The incident on September 30 left the aircraft in a dangerous descent before passengers and other pilots on board helped regain control and divert the plane safely to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. The girl, identified in reports as Nina Manes, was travelling with her parents on the flight carrying 174 people. When she asked her mother, Tali Manes, to take her to the lavatory, the pair moved towards the front of the aircraft.
Near the cockpit, Tali said she heard unusual noises and knocking coming from inside. She alerted a nearby flight attendant, and when the cockpit door was opened, she saw blood and a violent struggle involving Machchhar and the co-pilot. Tali told Israel’s Channel 12 that she saw blood across the cockpit and shouted for help after witnessing the attack. Her warning helped draw the attention of passengers and crew members to the cockpit at a critical moment. Machchhar, who had suffered stab wounds, was eventually able to open the cockpit door despite his injuries, allowing people outside to intervene. The sequence meant that passengers became directly involved in stopping the attacker and preventing the situation from escalating further.
The situation had already become extremely dangerous. Flight-tracking data showed that FZ1073 experienced dramatic altitude changes while flying over Saudi Arabia, with the aircraft losing thousands of feet in a matter of minutes. Reuters reported that the plane plunged more than 16,000 feet in about 30 seconds during its most severe descent. The aircraft subsequently stabilised before issuing an emergency signal and diverting towards Tabuk. Machchhar later described the struggle during a video call with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to his account, he realised the aircraft was going down while he was injured on the cockpit floor.

He said he forced himself towards the cockpit door and managed to open it so that people could enter and help. Passengers then rushed forward and overpowered the co-pilot. Other passengers helped restrain the attacker, while people with aviation experience assisted in keeping the aircraft under control. The intervention of passengers proved critical because there were also off-duty pilots travelling on the flight. After the attacker was subdued, those pilots helped take control of the aircraft. The plane was subsequently diverted to Tabuk Airport in north-western Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. All passengers and crew survived the incident, although both the captain and co-pilot suffered injuries.
Machchhar was later transferred to Abu Dhabi for treatment and was reported to be recovering. The precise circumstances surrounding the cockpit attack remain under investigation. Reuters reported that authorities in Saudi Arabia, Israel and the United Arab Emirates were examining the incident, while the motive and exact sequence of events inside the cockpit were not immediately clear. Reports have identified the co-pilot as Omani, but his identity and the circumstances surrounding the attack have been subject to continuing investigation. Officials have also cautioned against drawing premature conclusions about the motive.
What began as an ordinary request from a six-year-old to use the washroom therefore became an unexpected turning point during one of the most serious incidents involving the flight. Her mother’s decision to alert the crew after hearing the disturbance brought attention to the cockpit at a crucial stage, while Machchhar’s efforts to open the door allowed passengers to intervene. Together with the actions of crew members, passengers and off-duty pilots, those interventions helped bring FZ1073 under control and enabled the aircraft to make a safe emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.
