A 28-year-old man who jumped from the second floor of a building to escape a devastating fire in Lucknow's Aliganj area has survived but suffered severe spinal injuries that have left him paralysed from the waist down. The dramatic moment, captured on video and widely shared on television and social media, highlighted the desperate measures taken by people trapped inside the burning building during Monday's blaze. The survivor, Jayant Gupta, is currently undergoing treatment at King George's Medical University (KGMU).

Despite the life-changing injuries, Jayant has remained optimistic about his recovery. Speaking from the intensive care unit, he said he considered himself fortunate to have survived the incident. "I feel that I am lucky to have survived that horror," he said, adding that his primary motivation is to recover so he can continue supporting his family. Doctors treating him said his condition is being closely monitored, although it is too early to determine whether he will regain movement in the lower half of his body.

Jayant had been working as a junior character artist at an art production company called Head Hoppers for the past four years. According to his family members, he was regarded as a dedicated professional and had received several promising job offers from outside Lucknow, including an opportunity in Dubai. However, he chose to remain in the city so he could continue caring for his parents and his aunt, placing family responsibilities above career advancement.

The fire broke out in a commercial building in Aliganj, forcing several occupants to search for escape routes as flames and smoke rapidly spread through the premises. With no safe way out, Jayant made the split-second decision to jump from the second floor in an attempt to save his life. While the fall caused catastrophic injuries to his spine, it ultimately helped him escape the fire that threatened those trapped inside the building.

The incident has drawn widespread attention, with many expressing admiration for Jayant's courage and resilience in the face of overwhelming adversity. His story has also highlighted the importance of adequate fire safety measures in commercial establishments, including emergency exits, evacuation plans and fire prevention systems that can help reduce the risk of such tragedies during emergencies.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire and examine whether all mandatory safety regulations were being followed at the premises. Meanwhile, Jayant's family remains hopeful that he will recover with continued medical care and rehabilitation.
