The 13th edition of the Ladakh Marathon, the world’s highest AIMS-certified marathon, is scheduled to take place from September 10 to 13, 2026, across the rugged and scenic terrain of Ladakh. Registrations for all six races, including the Marathon (42 km), Half Marathon (21 km), 11.2 km Run, 5 km Run for Fun, and the ultra challenges Silk Route Ultra (122 km) and Khardung La Challenger (72 km), have officially opened on the event’s website.
Runners of all timed events must meet qualifying standards within the prescribed window due to the extreme high-altitude conditions of over 11,500 feet. Acclimatisation is mandatory, with ultra participants required to arrive in Leh at least 10 days prior to race day to ensure safety and readiness. Age eligibility varies from 12 years for the 5 km race to 24 years for the Silk Route Ultra.
The Silk Route Ultra and Khardung La Challenger are application-based and strictly capped, reserved for runners with proven marathon or ultra-distance credentials. These races, which ascend to 17,618 feet at Khardung La, also require document verification and mandatory medical clearance due to their high-risk nature.

Chewang Motup Goba, Chairperson of the High Altitude Sports Foundation and founder of the Ladakh Marathon, emphasised that running at such altitudes demands preparation, discipline, and respect for the mountains. “Eligibility criteria are protective measures ensuring that each participant understands the risks and is prepared for one of the toughest endurance challenges globally,” he said.
The 2025 edition saw representation from all 36 States and Union Territories of India, cementing the event as a truly national endurance platform. Organisers also highlighted eco-friendly measures, including biodegradable cups at aid stations, reusable serveware, and dry pit sanitation systems along the course to reduce water usage in this environmentally sensitive region.
With registrations now open, the Ladakh Marathon continues to blend sporting excellence with environmental responsibility, offering athletes a unique high-altitude challenge while promoting sustainable practices across the Himalayas.
