The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that severe heatwave conditions are expected to continue over the next few days, with temperatures in Delhi likely to approach 46 degrees Celsius. In response, authorities have issued an orange alert, urging residents to take precautions against heat-related illnesses and dehydration during the ongoing extreme weather conditions.
Health experts say that while drinking water is essential during a heatwave, relying solely on plain water may not be enough to maintain proper hydration in extreme temperatures. During intense heat, the body cools itself through sweating, which results not only in water loss but also in the depletion of vital electrolytes such as sodium, potassium and magnesium.
These electrolytes play an important role in maintaining fluid balance, muscle function and nerve signalling. According to medical experts, replacing sweat loss with only plain water in large quantities can dilute sodium levels in the bloodstream, potentially leading to a condition known as hyponatremia. Early symptoms can resemble dehydration and include dizziness, fatigue, headaches and muscle cramps, while severe cases may result in confusion, seizures or unconsciousness.

Doctors and nutrition experts recommend combining water intake with electrolyte-rich fluids and foods during prolonged exposure to high temperatures. Natural rehydration options such as coconut water, buttermilk, lemon water and oral rehydration solutions (ORS) are considered effective in restoring lost salts and minerals, particularly after outdoor activity or long hours in the heat.
Hydrating foods can also contribute significantly to maintaining fluid levels. Fruits and vegetables with high water content, including watermelon, cucumber and oranges, help replenish both fluids and essential nutrients. Experts additionally advise avoiding excessive consumption of alcohol, sugary soft drinks and heavy caffeine intake, as these can accelerate fluid loss and worsen dehydration.
Authorities have urged residents to avoid direct sun exposure during peak afternoon hours, wear light clothing and stay indoors whenever possible. Health professionals also recommend drinking fluids regularly instead of waiting for thirst to develop, as consistent hydration is considered critical in preventing heat exhaustion and heatstroke during prolonged heatwave conditions.
