Walking barefoot on natural surfaces such as grass, sand or soil for a few minutes every day may help promote relaxation and support overall well-being, according to cardiologist Dr Alok Chopra. In a recent social media post, the doctor highlighted the potential benefits of reconnecting with nature through a simple practice of spending time barefoot outdoors. Dr Chopra, a cardiologist with more than four decades of experience, shared the advice in an Instagram post titled “Reconnect with the Earth.” He suggested that walking barefoot for around 15 to 30 minutes daily could be incorporated into a healthy lifestyle routine.
According to him, the practice may help reduce stress, encourage relaxation and contribute to a greater sense of physical and mental balance. The cardiologist explained that direct contact between bare feet and natural surfaces is believed by some wellness practitioners to help the body reconnect with the environment. He said that when bare feet touch the ground, the body may discharge excess electrical charge into the Earth, which could support the body's natural electrical balance. Explaining the concept further, Dr Chopra referred to the process of repolarisation, which involves restoring a cell’s natural electrical charge after it has been disrupted.
He said this process is important for normal cellular function and suggested that contact with the Earth may support the body's electrical balance. The practice of walking barefoot outdoors, sometimes referred to as grounding or earthing, has gained popularity among wellness communities. Supporters believe that spending time in direct contact with natural surfaces can encourage relaxation and improve feelings of well-being. However, researchers continue to study the scientific evidence behind some of these claims, and more research is needed to establish the extent of health benefits. Beyond the grounding concept, walking barefoot can also provide physical benefits.

Moving on natural surfaces such as grass or sand can engage different muscles in the feet and lower legs, potentially improving foot strength, balance and body awareness. It may also encourage people to spend more time outdoors and engage in gentle physical activity. Health experts generally emphasise that regular movement, stress management, balanced nutrition and adequate sleep remain important components of maintaining good health. Activities such as walking, whether barefoot or with appropriate footwear, can form part of an active lifestyle when practised safely.
Dr Chopra advised people interested in trying barefoot walking to choose clean and safe environments to avoid injuries from sharp objects, uneven surfaces or contaminated areas. Individuals with certain health conditions, including foot-related problems or reduced sensation in their feet, may need to take extra precautions. While walking barefoot for a short period each day is a simple practice that many people can try, experts note that it should complement, rather than replace, established health habits. As interest in natural wellness approaches continues to grow, practices such as spending time outdoors and reconnecting with nature remain popular among those seeking simple ways to support overall well-being.
