After nearly two decades, the popular comedy franchise Bhagam Bhag is set to return with a sequel that brings a major casting change. Actor Manoj Bajpayee has reportedly been roped in to replace Govinda in Bhagam Bhag 2, while Akshay Kumar is set to reprise his role. The development has generated buzz among fans, given the original film’s cult following. Sources close to the project confirmed the casting update on Thursday.
The original Bhagam Bhag, released in 2006, was directed by Priyadarshan and became known for its fast-paced humour and ensemble cast. Akshay Kumar and Govinda’s comic chemistry was one of the film’s biggest highlights, along with Paresh Rawal’s performance. The sequel aims to retain the spirit of the original while introducing a fresh dynamic through its revamped cast. Makers believe the new combination will offer a different flavour of comedy.
Manoj Bajpayee stepping into a role earlier played by Govinda has sparked curiosity in Bollywood circles. Known primarily for intense and character-driven roles, Bajpayee has also showcased comic timing in select films. Industry insiders suggest that the actor will bring a distinct interpretation to the character rather than attempting to imitate Govinda’s style. The makers are banking on this contrast to add novelty to the sequel.

Akshay Kumar’s return is expected to provide continuity to the franchise and anchor the sequel. The actor has maintained a strong association with Priyadarshan-style comedies over the years. Paresh Rawal is also expected to be part of the project, though an official confirmation is awaited. Further details about the supporting cast and storyline are likely to be announced soon.
The first Bhagam Bhag featured an extensive ensemble including Lara Dutta, Rajpal Yadav, Jackie Shroff, Arbaaz Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Manoj Joshi and Asrani. The film drew inspiration from the Malayalam classic Mannar Mathai Speaking and went on to enjoy commercial success. With Bhagam Bhag 2, the makers are hoping to tap into nostalgia while appealing to a new generation of audiences.
