Stand-up comedian and actor Vir Das is set to add another feather to his cap with the release of his debut memoir, ‘The Outsider’. The International Emmy-winning comedian announced the book on Instagram, sharing a video that captured key moments from his life and career.
"I WROTE A BOOK!!!!! For ALL 'The Outsiders'... Laughter has truly saved my life. I hope to show you how funny and beautiful this world is," Das wrote. The memoir, published by Simon & Schuster, is now available for pre-order.
In ‘The Outsider’, Das will take readers through his unconventional journey, marked by self-discovery, heartbreak, failure, and laughter. One anecdote recounts being stranded on a pier in Cozumel, Mexico, after his cruise ship left without him due to visa issues.
Born in India, Das spent his early years between India and Lagos, Nigeria, often feeling like an outsider. Reflecting on his unique path, he said, “I’ve had a strange life that took me across the world more than anyone I know... I don’t know how one ends up being the Indian kid in Nigeria, the African kid in boarding school, the boarding school kid in Delhi Public School, the Delhi kid in Galesburg, Illinois, the Chicago guy in Alabama, the America-return in Mumbai, the Bollywood guy in comedy, and the Indian in American comedy.”
Das hopes the memoir will offer readers a glimpse into his experiences as an outsider navigating diverse cultures and identities. "When you are blessed enough to step into all those worlds, you write a book about it," he added.
Known for his hit stand-up specials like Abroad Understanding, Losing It, and the Emmy-winning Landing, Das is currently on his 'Mind Fool' world tour, performing in 33 countries.
