Filmmaker Mel Gibson has released the first look at The Resurrection of the Christ, the long-awaited sequel to his 2004 biblical drama The Passion of the Christ. The announcement comes alongside confirmation from Lionsgate that production on the film has officially wrapped after 134 days of shooting across multiple locations in Italy.
The film, now titled The Resurrection of the Christ Part One, has been rescheduled and will release on May 6, 2027, after being moved from its earlier March 26 release date. The studio also confirmed that the project will be released as a two-part series, expanding the scope of Gibson’s continuation of the biblical story.
Part Two has also been delayed and is now slated for release on May 25, 2028, instead of its previously planned May 6, 2027 date. According to reports, both films are expected to premiere around Ascension Day, a significant Christian observance marking the ascension of Jesus into heaven.

Gibson described the project as deeply personal, stating that it represents “a mission” he has carried for more than two decades. He credited his cast, crew, and longtime collaborators for helping bring his vision to life, adding that reuniting with members of the original The Passion of the Christ team helped shape the new films as intended.
The upcoming films feature an ensemble cast including Jaakko Ohtonen, Mariela Garriga, Pier Luigi Pasino, Kasia Smutniak, Riccardo Scamarcio, and Rupert Everett. The sequel continues the narrative from The Passion of the Christ, which starred Jim Caviezel and Monica Bellucci and focused on the final hours leading to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
Released in 2004, the original film became a global box office phenomenon, earning over $610 million worldwide on a reported $30 million budget. It remains one of the highest-grossing R-rated films in North America and received three Academy Award nominations for cinematography, original score, and makeup.
