Karan Johar, the host of The Traitors Season 2, has revealed details about the reality show's closely guarded process for selecting its traitors and insisted that the programme is not scripted. During a recent Instagram Live interaction, Karan said an extensive process involving psychological evaluations and multiple interviews is used to identify the contestants best suited for the role. He said the final decision is taken collectively by a team rather than by him alone.
Explaining how the selection works, Karan said the production team conducts detailed psychological assessments and interviews with the contestants before arriving at the final group of traitors. He said he is involved in the process alongside the creative teams working on the show. According to Karan, the three initial traitors also have a role in deciding who will eventually join them as the fourth traitor, adding another layer to the selection process.
Karan was equally emphatic that the events and conversations that unfold after filming begins are not scripted. Responding to a question about whether the show is pre-planned, he said the programme is format-driven but that no particular beat or line is scripted. He said contestants are not given dialogues or told what to say, while the instructions he receives are limited to explaining the rules and regulations of the game. The host said the unpredictability of the contestants is central to the format.

The secrecy surrounding the show extends even to Karan himself, according to the filmmaker. He said that during the 14 days he spends at the palace, he does not interact with the traitors outside his role as host. Karan also revealed that he is not informed in advance about which contestant has been "murdered" during the night or who the final traitors are until he reaches the set and receives the relevant instructions. He said the show's secrets are closely protected throughout production.
Karan added that members of the cast and crew are required to sign non-disclosure agreements to prevent information from being revealed before episodes are released. He said this is also why he has avoided discussing upcoming developments publicly. Describing The Traitors as an especially unscripted reality format, Karan said the strict secrecy is necessary to preserve the surprises and uncertainty that drive the game. The show relies on the contestants' decisions and interactions rather than pre-written scenes or dialogues.
The host also addressed the online clashes between fans of contestants Abhishek Malhan and Munawar Faruqui. Karan said he appreciates the strong support shown by viewers but urged fans not to abuse or attack each other over the game. He acknowledged that Munawar's elimination was difficult for his supporters but said eliminations are part of the format and contestants cannot control every outcome. The Traitors Season 2 continues to release new episodes every Thursday on Prime Video.
