Huma Qureshi is set to captivate audiences with her powerful performance in the upcoming film Bayaan, a female-led thriller that merges hyper-local Indian storytelling with universal resonance. Directed by Bikas Mishra, known for Chauranga, the film casts Qureshi as Roohi, a tenacious Delhi-based police officer navigating a complex case in a small Rajasthan town.
In an exclusive interview with PTI, Qureshi described her role as both challenging and deeply rewarding. “Portraying Roohi pushed me to my limits. It’s a female-driven story that’s rooted in India’s heartland but speaks to a global audience with its themes and mindset,” she said. The film, a police procedural drama, follows Roohi as she investigates allegations of sexual abuse against a revered cult leader, uncovering the stark realities of power and patriarchy.
Bayaan premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, earning praise for its nuanced exploration of systemic complicity. Qureshi believes the film’s blend of investigative drama, thriller elements, and a strong female protagonist gives it broad appeal. “It’s accessible, thrilling, and deeply relatable. With the right release strategy, Bayaan can shine both at international festivals and in theaters,” she noted.

For Qureshi, whose credits include Gangs of Wasseypur, Badlapur, Monica, O My Darling, and acclaimed series like Leila and Maharani, Bayaan is a chance to dive into a meaty, performance-driven role. “As an actor, leading a film like this is exhilarating. It’s a chance to sink my teeth into a complex character while representing Indian cinema on a global stage,” she said, highlighting her pride in showcasing Indian stories and style at international festivals.
Reflecting on her festival journey, which includes appearances at Cannes for Gangs of Wasseypur and Berlinale for Viceroy’s House, Qureshi emphasized the role of film festivals in expanding her reach. “Festivals celebrate cinema beyond borders. They’ve helped me grow my audience and explore diverse roles, from commercial hits to indie gems,” she said.
Featuring a talented ensemble including Chandrachur Singh, Sachin Khedekar, Swati Das, and Vibhore Mayank, Bayaan is produced by Shiladitya Bora, Madhu Sharma, Kunal Kumar, and Anuj Gupta. With its compelling narrative and Qureshi’s standout performance, the film is poised to leave a mark on both Indian and global audiences.
