Actor George Clooney and human rights lawyer Amal Clooney have temporarily left their home in southern France after a wildfire spread close to their estate near Brignoles. The evacuation came as France continues to battle one of its most severe wildfire seasons in recent years, with authorities working to contain several active blazes across the region.

The couple owns Domaine du Canadel, a sprawling estate near Brignoles, where a wildfire approached on Wednesday evening. Although local authorities did not issue an official evacuation order for the property, the Clooneys chose to leave voluntarily as a precautionary measure due to the advancing fire.

In a letter addressed to the mayor of Brignoles, the couple expressed concern about the fate of their home and solidarity with the local community. “At this point we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment,” they wrote, adding that they remained committed to supporting the village and helping it recover regardless of the outcome.

Authorities later confirmed the authenticity of the letter. The mayor said the decision to evacuate was taken voluntarily by the Clooneys and was not mandated by emergency officials. The couple’s estate covers around 170 hectares and includes an 18th-century manor house, vineyards, a pond and other facilities.

The wildfire near Brignoles has scorched approximately 130 hectares of land and forced the evacuation of more than 600 residents. Officials said that while most evacuees were allowed to return to their homes on Thursday, emergency teams continued to monitor the situation as firefighters worked to fully contain the blaze.

A large-scale firefighting operation remains underway, with around 270 firefighters deployed to the affected area, supported by four water-bombing helicopters. Authorities reported that four firefighters sustained injuries during the operation, while efforts continue to prevent the fire from spreading further.
