Volkswagen has commenced local assembly of its upcoming flagship SUV, the Tayron R-Line, marking a significant step in the brand’s renewed push in the premium SUV segment in India. The seven-seater model is being assembled at Volkswagen’s manufacturing facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad) and is scheduled for launch in March 2026.
The Tayron R-Line is positioned as the brand’s new top-of-the-line SUV for the Indian market and will expand Volkswagen’s growing R-Line portfolio. With its three-row layout, the model also signals Volkswagen’s return to the large SUV space, which it exited after discontinuing the Tiguan in 2021. The Tayron R-Line is expected to compete directly with rivals such as the Jeep Meridian, MG Gloster, and the upcoming Skoda Kodiaq RS.
Built on Volkswagen’s MQB EVO platform, the Tayron R-Line shares its underpinnings with the Tiguan R-Line but features a longer wheelbase of 2,789 mm, extended by 109 mm to accommodate the third row. Powering the SUV will be a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 204 hp and 320 Nm of torque, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels.

While its exterior design closely resembles the Tiguan, the Tayron R-Line is expected to feature distinct lighting elements to set it apart. Inside, the SUV is likely to offer a premium cabin with ventilated front seats, a 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a fully digital instrument cluster, a panoramic sunroof, and ambient lighting with up to 30 colour options. A three-zone climate control system is also anticipated.
On the safety front, the Tayron R-Line is expected to be well-equipped, with features such as seven airbags, a 360-degree camera, a tyre pressure monitoring system, an electronic parking brake, and Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Priced around ₹50 lakh, the Tayron R-Line is set to strengthen Volkswagen’s presence in India’s premium SUV market and re-establish the brand in the three-row SUV category.
