Italian motorcycle giant Ducati is gearing up for the launch of an updated DesertX adventure bike, with spy shots revealing a significant engine overhaul and subtle design tweaks. Captured during testing by enthusiasts and shared via Motorrad, the camouflaged prototype suggests a second-generation model that retains the rugged silhouette of its predecessor while incorporating a more compact V2 powerplant. This development aligns with Ducati's ongoing strategy to standardise its V2 engine across mid-range adventure and touring models, potentially debuting the refreshed DesertX in 2026 as part of the brand's packed launch calendar.
The standout feature in the test mule is the replacement of the current 937cc Testastretta V2 engine with an 890cc V2 unit, already familiar from the Multistrada V2 and Multistrada V2 S lineups. On those models, the engine produces 115.6 horsepower at 10,750 rpm and 92.1 Nm of torque at 8,250 rpm, offering a slight edge over the existing DesertX's 110 hp at 9,250 rpm and 92 Nm at 6,500 rpm. This swap promises enhanced performance without sacrificing the bike's off-road prowess, as the new mill is approximately 5.8 kg lighter. Ducati's recent Multistrada V2 refresh shed a substantial 18 kg through chassis optimisations, and similar weight-saving measures—bolstered by a redesigned frame—are expected here, improving agility on diverse terrains from deserts to highways.
Visually, the prototype maintains the DesertX's iconic adventure stance, including a tall windscreen and twin-headlamp front end that evoke the model's rally-inspired heritage. However, refinements are evident in the tail section and swingarm, which appear sleeker and more integrated, potentially enhancing aerodynamics and rear suspension travel. The heavy camouflage obscures finer details like bodywork contours and wheel sizes, but the overall proportions hint at evolutionary rather than revolutionary changes. This approach mirrors Ducati's philosophy of refining proven designs, as seen in the 2022 DesertX debut, which drew acclaim for its balance of street legality and off-road capability.
