Apple is reportedly planning to shrink the Dynamic Island on its upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models by about 35 per cent, according to tipster Ice Universe. The change could be made possible through under-display infrared sensors, which would allow Apple to reduce the size of the notch while keeping Face ID functionality intact.
The iPhone 17 Pro models, launched in September 2025, feature a Dynamic Island cutout measuring 20.76 mm. For the iPhone 18 Pro series, this width is expected to drop to 13.49 mm, representing a significant reduction. The pill-shaped Dynamic Island, first introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro in 2022, houses the selfie camera and Face ID sensors and also supports Live Activities for notifications and real-time alerts.
Under-display Face ID technology is anticipated to be a key feature, allowing Apple to move parts of the sensor array beneath the screen. While some components may still remain visible, the smaller notch would help create a more seamless front display. Rumours indicate the front-facing camera will stay centred within the downsized Dynamic Island rather than moving to the top-left corner, as speculated earlier.

The iPhone 18 series is expected to launch in September 2026, and the new design is likely to remain standard through 2026 and 2027. Analysts suggest that these changes reflect Apple’s ongoing focus on maximising screen real estate and refining user experience with smaller, less intrusive notches. This update continues Apple’s trend of gradually reducing the Dynamic Island size across successive iPhone generations while integrating advanced biometric technology beneath the display.
