Sony is reportedly exploring a significant memory upgrade for its next-generation gaming console, widely referred to as the PlayStation 6 (PS6), as the PlayStation 5 enters the later stage of its life cycle. The PS5, which launched in 2020, will complete six years later this year, and early development of its successor is said to be underway. A new leak suggests the PS6 could feature up to 30GB of unified memory, a substantial jump over the current generation.
The information comes from known leaker KeplerL2, who shared details on a community forum indicating that Sony is considering memory configurations well beyond those used in the PS5 and PS5 Pro. Both current consoles are equipped with 16GB of unified memory, although the PS5 Pro benefits from higher memory bandwidth and greater flexibility for developers. The rumoured PS6 configuration would mark a major step forward in raw memory capacity.
According to the leak, the PS6 could use 3GB GDDR7 memory modules arranged in a clamshell layout, paired with ten 16-bit memory channels. This setup would reportedly result in a 160-bit memory bus and, when combined with 32Gbps memory chips, deliver memory bandwidth of around 640GB/s. By comparison, the standard PS5 offers 448GB/s of bandwidth, while the PS5 Pro reaches up to 576GB/s.

In practical terms, the expanded unified memory and higher bandwidth could allow the PS6 to support more complex game worlds, higher-resolution textures, and advanced AI-driven systems. Faster data transfer may also help reduce texture pop-in and stuttering, enabling smoother gameplay experiences as game engines continue to scale in ambition and detail.
A separate Digital Trends report adds that Sony may adopt a non-standard memory split, reserving part of the total memory for system-level operations while dynamically allocating the remainder to games. This approach could give developers greater flexibility when designing large, resource-intensive titles.
Sony has not officially announced the PlayStation 6 or confirmed any specifications or launch plans. Recent reports suggest the console could arrive later than 2028, as Sony is believed to be targeting a longer life cycle for the PS5, potentially extending the current generation to at least eight years before transitioning to new hardware.
