Stainless steel utensils and other metal objects are generally not recommended for use inside an operating microwave oven. While the warning is familiar to most people, the reason lies in the way microwaves interact with metal. Unlike glass or microwave-safe ceramics, metal can affect the movement of electromagnetic energy inside the oven and create potentially hazardous conditions.
A microwave oven heats food by producing electromagnetic waves that cause molecules, particularly water molecules, in the food to move and generate heat. Metal behaves differently because it contains many free electrons that can respond to the microwave's electromagnetic field. Instead of allowing the energy to pass through in the same way as it does through many non-metallic materials, a metal surface reflects much of the microwave energy.
The shape of a stainless steel utensil also matters. Smooth, broad metal surfaces can reflect microwaves, while sharp edges, corners and pointed sections can concentrate electrical charges. This can lead to electrical discharges, commonly referred to as arcing, particularly when the metal is close to another conductive surface. Such arcing can damage the microwave or potentially ignite materials inside it.

Stainless steel utensils may therefore interfere with the normal distribution of microwave energy within the oven. In addition to creating sparks under certain conditions, the reflected energy can place additional stress on components of the microwave. The risk can vary depending on the utensil's shape, size, position and proximity to the oven's metal surfaces.
This is why manufacturers generally instruct users to avoid placing stainless steel cutlery, containers or other unsuitable metal objects inside a microwave unless the appliance's instructions specifically permit a particular type of metal accessory. Some microwaves are designed with certain metal components or accessories that are safe under specified conditions, but that does not mean ordinary stainless steel utensils are automatically safe.
The safest approach is to transfer food into containers specifically labelled as microwave-safe before heating it. Using appropriate glass, ceramic or other microwave-safe cookware helps ensure that the microwave energy is absorbed by the food as intended and reduces the risk of sparks, damage or other problems caused by unsuitable metal objects.
