Former India and Chennai Super Kings batter Suresh Raina has criticised the Indian Premier League’s Impact Player rule, arguing that the regulation has increasingly tilted the balance of the game in favour of batters. The four-time IPL winner said bowlers have been placed under excessive pressure since the rule was introduced in 2023. Raina also questioned whether the rule allows players to develop their all-round skills, pointing out that specialist players can contribute in one discipline and then remain out of the game.

Raina said the Impact Player rule has contributed to the dramatic increase in scoring during recent IPL seasons. Scores of 250 or more have become increasingly common, while totals that would previously have been considered highly competitive are now being chased successfully. He pointed to the changing nature of T20 cricket and argued that the sport needs to retain a meaningful role for bowlers rather than becoming overwhelmingly dominated by batting.

Under the Impact Player system, each team names five potential substitutes after the toss and can bring one of them into the match during the game. The replacement can be made after the first ball has been bowled, allowing teams to use specialist batting or bowling options according to the circumstances. While the rule was introduced to add tactical flexibility and entertainment value, it has remained controversial among players and observers who believe it has reduced the importance of all-rounders and weakened the traditional balance between bat and ball.

Raina said the rule has also affected player development, particularly for cricketers who are physically capable of contributing in more than one discipline. He argued that players who bat and then sit out do not receive the same opportunities to improve other aspects of their game. He also said bowlers now face greater pressure because teams can introduce additional batting strength, making it harder for them to contain runs or create wicket-taking opportunities.

The former India batter also expressed his view on whether Indian cricketers should be permitted to participate in overseas franchise leagues. Raina said he currently sees little reason for Indian players to play in foreign competitions because of the scale and quality of the IPL. He noted that the Indian league attracts leading international players and has developed significantly compared with the period when Indian players were more interested in gaining experience in competitions such as the Big Bash League and The Hundred.

Raina’s comments add to the continuing debate over the Impact Player rule, which has previously drawn criticism from several prominent cricketers. While the regulation has provided teams with additional tactical options and contributed to high-scoring matches, critics argue that it has come at the expense of competitive balance. The discussion is likely to continue as the IPL evaluates how best to maintain its entertainment appeal while ensuring that both batters and bowlers have meaningful opportunities to influence matches.
