Argentine Football Association (AFA) President Claudio "Chiqui" Tapia praised the national team despite its heartbreaking 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, thanking the players for their commitment and determination throughout the tournament. Following the loss, Tapia said the squad had represented Argentina with pride and had once again inspired millions of supporters by reaching the World Cup final during Lionel Messi's title defence.

In a message shared on social media, Tapia expressed gratitude to the players, coaching staff and support personnel for their efforts. "Standing tall, Argentina, with your head held high. Simply thank you for giving everything from start to finish, for representing an entire country with heart, and for allowing us to dream again. Proud of this squad, of the coaching staff, of the collaborators, and of all the people," he wrote. His comments came shortly after Spain secured victory in one of the most closely contested finals of the tournament.

Spain claimed the World Cup title after substitute Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute of extra time, firing a powerful finish past goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. The defeat brought an end to Argentina's bid to successfully defend the World Cup they won in Qatar in 2022 and marked another significant chapter in the international career of Lionel Messi, who also guided the nation to Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024.

The victory earned Spain its second men's FIFA World Cup title and its first since the triumph in 2010. Spain completed an outstanding tournament, remaining unbeaten throughout the competition while conceding only one goal in eight matches. Spain's title-winning campaign included victories over Saudi Arabia, Uruguay, Austria, Portugal, Belgium and France before overcoming Argentina in the final. Spain dominated possession in the championship match and restricted Argentina to just one shot on target. Argentina's task became even more difficult after Enzo Fernandez was sent off in extra time following a second yellow card. Despite the disappointment, Tapia's message reflected the pride felt across Argentina, acknowledging the team's resilience and the excitement it generated throughout the tournament.
