P.V. Sindhu delivered a thrilling upset at the China Open Super 1000, defeating Japan’s sixth-seeded Tomoka Miyazaki 21-15, 8-21, 21-17 in a 62-minute battle to advance to the round of 16. The world No. 15, rebounding from a string of early exits this season, dominated the first game with a 7-point streak but faced a fierce Miyazaki comeback in the second. Sindhu regained control in the decider, leading 11-2 early and holding off a late surge to secure her first top-10 win of 2025, avenging her 2024 Swiss Open loss to the 18-year-old world No. 6. She next faces either Unnati Hooda or Kirsty Gilmour.
In men’s doubles, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, ranked world No. 15, powered past Japan’s Kenya Mitsuhashi and Hiroki Okamura 21-13, 21-9 in just 31 minutes, showcasing relentless pressure and precision. The former world No. 1 pair, aiming to break their semi-final jinx after deep runs at the Malaysia, India, and Singapore Opens, will face tougher tests ahead of the World Championships (August 25-31, Paris).
However, the women’s doubles pair of Rutaparna and Swetaparna Panda fell to Hong Kong’s Yeung Nga Ting and Yeung Pui Lam 12-21, 13-21 in 31 minutes, ending India’s campaign in that category. Other Indian contenders, including Unnati Hooda and Anupama Upadhyaya in women’s singles, and doubles pairs like Kavipriya Selvam-Simran Singhi, continue their campaigns.
