Indian cricketer Sanju Samson addressed his unexpected demotion in the batting order during India’s triumphant Asia Cup 2025 campaign with characteristic humility and team spirit. The wicketkeeper-batter, who has been a mainstay in India’s T20I lineup, was pushed to the middle order, primarily at No. 5, after regularly opening the batting for nearly a year. The return of vice-captain Shubman Gill prompted the reshuffle, with Samson even batting below the top seven in one match. Despite the change, Samson expressed unwavering commitment to the team’s needs at the CEAT Cricket Rating Awards 2025.
“I think when you wear the Indian jersey, you can’t say no to anything,” Samson said, reflecting on his role. “Even if you want me to bat at No. 9, maybe bowl some left-arm spin, or whatever job for the country, I don’t mind.” His light-hearted remark underscored his adaptability and dedication, qualities that have defined his stop-start international career spanning a decade. Samson, who has played just 40 T20I matches since his debut in 2015, emphasised his pride in wearing the Indian jersey and overcoming challenges while tuning out external criticism.
Samson’s contributions in the Asia Cup 2025, held in the United Arab Emirates, were pivotal despite his lower batting positions. He delivered a crucial 39 off 23 balls against Sri Lanka in the Super Four stage and a quickfire 24 in the final against Pakistan, helping India secure the title. These cameos highlighted his ability to adapt to high-pressure situations, reinforcing his value to the team.

Reflecting on his journey, Samson noted, “I’m really proud of the person I am today and the challenges I went through.” His focus on mental resilience and “internal noise” has been key to navigating a career marked by inconsistent opportunities. As India builds toward future global tournaments, Samson’s versatility and positive mindset position him as a vital asset in the T20I setup.
