Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has dismissed speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma's future in international cricket, saying the Indian captain cannot simply be sidelined despite recent retirement rumours. Ashwin also stressed that both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have made immense contributions to Indian cricket, making any discussion about moving on from the veteran duo premature. Retirement speculation gathered pace during India's recently concluded ODI series against England, with several media reports claiming that the team management was looking to phase out Rohit in favour of younger players as part of preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The reports were, however, rejected by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, who denied that any such decision had been taken. The rumours intensified after Rohit managed scores of 11 and 26 in the first two ODIs against England. However, the veteran opener responded in style by scoring a brilliant century in the third ODI at Lord's. Although India lost the match and the series, Rohit's innings served as a reminder of his ability to deliver on the biggest stages.

Following the century, Rohit addressed the speculation for the first time, saying he had learned to ignore the "outside noise" throughout his career. The Indian skipper said external opinions had never influenced his approach and that he remained focused on contributing to the team's success whenever given the opportunity. Ashwin echoed a similar sentiment, rejecting the suggestion that Rohit or Virat Kohli could be pushed aside based on speculation. The former off-spinner said both players have played defining roles in India's success over the past decade and deserve to be judged on their performances rather than rumours circulating outside the dressing room.
