P.V. Sindhu crashed out of the Thailand Open 2026 after suffering a hard-fought quarterfinal defeat against Japan’s top seed Akane Yamaguchi in Bangkok on Friday. The Indian badminton star started strongly and claimed the opening game but was unable to maintain momentum as Yamaguchi staged a comeback to secure victory in the women’s singles contest at the Super 500 tournament.
Sindhu lost the match 21-19, 18-21, and 15-21 in a contest lasting slightly over an hour. The two-time Olympic medalist and sixth seed had looked in control after edging the first game through aggressive rallies and precise shot placement. However, world number three Yamaguchi gradually regained rhythm in the following games, forcing longer exchanges and capitalizing on unforced errors from the Indian shuttler to complete the turnaround and advance to the semifinals.
The defeat ended Sindhu’s promising run at the USD 500,000 tournament after she had comfortably reached the quarterfinal stage with a straight-games victory over Denmark’s Amalie Schulz on Thursday. Sindhu has been seeking consistency on the international circuit in recent months as she continues preparations for upcoming major tournaments and qualification events leading toward future global competitions.

India’s campaign at the Thailand Open, however, remained alive with Lakshya Sen scheduled to compete in the men’s singles quarterfinals later in the day. The men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty was also set to feature in their quarterfinal clash. The Thailand Open continues to be an important stop on the international badminton calendar, attracting several of the world’s top-ranked players.
