Indian badminton star PV Sindhu defeated Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi in straight games to win the Japan Open 2026 title at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on Sunday. Sindhu secured a 21-17, 21-17 victory over the home favourite, claiming her maiden Japan Open crown and becoming the first Indian player to win the prestigious tournament. The triumph marked a major comeback moment for the two-time Olympic medallist after a challenging period affected by injuries and inconsistent results.
The Japan Open title is Sindhu’s biggest achievement since she won the World Championships in 2019. Her previous title victory came at the Syed Modi International in 2024, but the latest win represents a significant milestone as it is her first Super 750 tournament title. The victory also ended doubts surrounding her ability to compete at the highest level following a prolonged title drought and the increasing intensity of modern badminton.
Sindhu displayed a combination of powerful attacking strokes, tactical awareness, and mental strength throughout the final. Using sharp cross-court drops and accurate smashes, she disrupted Yamaguchi’s rhythm and maintained pressure during crucial moments. The opening game remained closely contested, but Sindhu held her composure under pressure and produced a late burst of points to take the first game 21-17.

In the second game, Sindhu continued her aggressive approach and forced Yamaguchi into making errors with her attacking play and strong court coverage. The Indian shuttler also impressed with her defensive skills, successfully countering Yamaguchi’s quick net exchanges and returning difficult shots. Although the Japanese player attempted a late comeback with support from the home crowd, Sindhu stayed focused and controlled the final stages of the match.
The historic win serves as a strong statement from Sindhu as she continues her pursuit of major badminton honours. By defeating the world No. 3 player on her home court, Sindhu showed that she remains a formidable competitor among the sport’s elite. Her Japan Open triumph adds another landmark achievement to an already decorated career and signals her return to winning form on the international stage.
