The Mumbai Indians faced scrutiny after their elimination from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 playoff race, with head coach Mahela Jayawardene addressing tough questions about team selection and the form of key players. The five-time champions were knocked out following a last-ball defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru, despite posting a competitive total of 166/7 on a challenging surface.
In the aftermath of the exit, Jayawardene described the season as “disappointing,” acknowledging that the team failed to maintain consistency in both batting and bowling. He noted that Mumbai Indians were “two or three wins away” from being in playoff contention but repeatedly fell short in crucial moments. The coach admitted that the team struggled with execution across departments, which ultimately cost them qualification.
A major talking point throughout the season was the inconsistent availability and form of senior Indian players, including Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and Jasprit Bumrah. Young batter Tilak Varma also showed flashes of promise but struggled for consistency. The frequent changes in playing XI led to public speculation about whether selection decisions were influenced by internal “politics” or performance pressure.

Responding to those claims, Jayawardene firmly rejected the idea that non-selection of senior players was politically driven. He explained that most changes were forced due to injuries and fitness concerns, rather than tactical reshuffling. According to him, the team management had limited opportunity to maintain a stable lineup, which disrupted rhythm and continuity throughout the campaign.
Jayawardene also defended the team’s decision to continue backing its core group of experienced players, stating that their commitment and effort remained strong even during difficult phases. He emphasized that players returning from major tournaments, including the recent World Cup, were still trusted due to their proven track record and leadership value within the squad.
Despite the disappointing season, the coach stressed that the responsibility lies collectively with the team rather than individuals. He concluded that Mumbai Indians must reassess their overall execution and return stronger, highlighting that sustained improvement in basic skills and consistency will be key to future success in the tournament.
