Two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra has made it clear that he is not under pressure to cross the 90-metre mark every time he competes, saying that winning major championships and delivering consistent performances matter more than chasing a specific distance. Ahead of the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2026 athletics competition, the Indian javelin star said his primary focus remains on improving his performance and competing effectively in challenging conditions rather than becoming fixated on a single milestone.
The 90-metre barrier is considered one of the most prestigious achievements in men's javelin throw, with only a select group of athletes managing to breach the mark in international competition. Chopra joined that elite list when he produced a personal best throw of 90.23 metres at the Doha Diamond League last year. The achievement ended a long wait for the Indian athlete and was celebrated as another landmark moment in his already historic career. However, Chopra said reaching the 90-metre mark does not define his success as an athlete.
Responding to a PTI query, he said he does not feel pressure to achieve a particular distance in every event. "No, I don't feel that pressure, nor do I obsess over a specific distance. As an athlete, my goal is always to improve my distance," Chopra said. The reigning world champion explained that every competition presents different challenges, including weather conditions, competition pressure and the performance of opponents. According to him, an athlete's ability to adapt and produce results under different circumstances is more important than focusing only on numerical targets.

He believes that medals and championship victories are the true indicators of success at the highest level. Chopra's career has been defined by his ability to deliver in major competitions. He created history by becoming India's first Olympic champion in athletics after winning gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. He later added a silver medal at the Paris Olympics and became a world champion in 2023, establishing himself among the world's leading javelin throwers.
Despite achieving several milestones, Chopra has consistently maintained a grounded approach towards his sport. He has often spoken about the importance of technical improvement, fitness, consistency and mental preparation. His focus has remained on becoming a better athlete rather than simply chasing records or personal milestones. This approach has helped him maintain a high level of performance across major international events. The Indian star's comments come at a time when expectations around him continue to rise.
With every competition, fans and supporters look forward to another record-breaking throw, especially after his historic 90-metre achievement. However, Chopra has repeatedly stressed that conditions on the day and competition strategy play a crucial role in determining results. Ahead of CWG 2026, Chopra will once again be among the biggest names expected to challenge for the top position in men's javelin. The event will provide him with another opportunity to compete against some of the world's best athletes and add to his impressive collection of achievements.
While a 90-metre-plus throw would further enhance his legacy, Chopra believes that winning titles and performing consistently remain the ultimate goals. The 27-year-old athlete's approach reflects the mindset of a champion who values long-term excellence over individual records. By prioritising performance, preparation and results, Chopra continues to set high standards for Indian athletics. As he prepares for future international competitions, the focus will remain on his ability to deliver when it matters most, rather than just the distance recorded on the scoreboard.
