The Indian Army and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh paid heartfelt tributes to Captain Vikram Batra on Monday, commemorating his heroic sacrifice during the 1999 Kargil War. Known for his extraordinary courage, Batra’s legacy continues to inspire as the nation approaches the 26th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas on July 26.
The Army, in a post on X, recalled Batra’s valor with the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles (JAK RIF). During Operation Vijay, he led the capture of Point 5140, eliminating four enemy soldiers in hand-to-hand combat. In a subsequent assault on Point 4875, Batra displayed unparalleled bravery, neutralizing five enemy soldiers at point-blank range despite severe injuries. His leadership enabled his troops to seize the strategic peak, a feat deemed nearly impossible. For his gallantry, Batra was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military honor.
“Captain Vikram Batra’s superhuman courage and exemplary leadership inspire us all. We pay our tribute,” the Army stated, sharing a video clip honoring his sacrifice.
