Croatian football captain Luka Modrić has firmly dismissed speculation surrounding his retirement, stating that his sole focus remains on the ongoing FIFA World Cup campaign. The veteran midfielder, who is preparing to lead Croatia in their tournament opener against England, said he is fully committed to helping his team perform at the highest level and is not distracted by discussions about his future in international football.
Speaking ahead of the high-profile clash scheduled to take place in Texas, Modrić emphasised that Croatia is approaching the tournament with belief and determination. The 40-year-old, who also plays for AC Milan at club level, said the team respects all opponents but does not fear any side, including England, who are considered one of the strong contenders in the competition.
Modrić, one of the most decorated midfielders in modern football history, has previously won six UEFA Champions League titles with Real Madrid and played a central role in Croatia’s historic run to the 2018 FIFA World Cup final and their third-place finish in 2022. Despite nearing 200 international appearances, he made it clear that he is not viewing this tournament as a farewell tour and remains focused on competitive success.

Addressing questions about Croatia’s mindset, Modrić highlighted the importance of unity within the squad. He said the team’s strength in recent tournaments has come from collective discipline and cohesion, adding that Croatia intends to maintain that identity as they face some of the strongest teams in world football.
The midfielder also positioned himself as a link between Croatia’s experienced core and younger emerging players. He said senior players have a responsibility to guide the next generation, helping them adapt to the pressures of international competition while allowing them the freedom to express their talent on the field.
With his AC Milan contract set to expire this summer, though with an option for extension, Modrić’s immediate focus remains firmly on the World Cup. As Croatia prepare for their opening match against England, the veteran midfielder has sent a clear message of intent: experience, unity and belief will define their campaign as they chase their first-ever World Cup title.
