France captain Kylian Mbappe finished as the FIFA World Cup 2026 Golden Boot winner after an outstanding tournament in North America, ending the competition with 10 goals and four assists in eight matches. Although France failed to reach the final after losing to eventual champions Spain in the semi-finals and later suffered a 6-4 defeat to England in the third-place playoff, Mbappe's prolific performances secured him the tournament's top scorer award for the second consecutive World Cup.
Mbappe began his campaign in emphatic fashion by scoring braces against Senegal and Iraq before registering two assists against Norway in the group stage. He continued his rich vein of form with another brace against Sweden in the Round of 32, netted the winning goal against Paraguay in the Round of 16, and contributed a goal and an assist against Morocco in the quarter-finals. He concluded his tournament with two goals and an assist against England, taking his final tally to 10 goals and four assists.
The race for the Golden Boot remained undecided until the final round of matches. Mbappe and Lionel Messi entered the closing stages level on eight goals, with Messi holding the advantage due to assists. However, Mbappe's two-goal performance in the third-place playoff moved him to 10 goals, while Messi was unable to add to his tally during Argentina's 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the World Cup final, allowing the French captain to claim the prestigious individual honour.

The 27-year-old also rewrote several World Cup records during the tournament. His 10-goal haul made him the first player since Gerd Muller in 1970 to score double digits in a single men's FIFA World Cup. He also became the first footballer to win back-to-back FIFA World Cup Golden Boot awards after previously finishing as the tournament's leading scorer at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Mbappe's remarkable consistency also saw him become the all-time leading goalscorer in men's FIFA World Cup history, taking his career tally to 22 World Cup goals, surpassing Lionel Messi's 21 and Miroslav Klose's 16. He reached the milestone in just 22 World Cup appearances, averaging one goal per match across the 2018, 2022 and 2026 editions. He further extended his record for the most non-penalty goals in men's World Cup history with 19.
The final Golden Boot standings saw Kylian Mbappe finish first with 10 goals and four assists, followed by Lionel Messi with eight goals and four assists. Jude Bellingham of England finished third with seven goals and one assist, ahead of Erling Haaland of Norway, who also scored seven goals. Despite France falling short of another World Cup final appearance, Mbappe's record-breaking campaign once again established him as one of the finest performers on football's biggest stage.
