India’s campaign at the Korea Masters Super 500 badminton tournament came to a disheartening close on the opening day of the main draw, marked by HS Prannoy’s injury-induced retirement and defeats for other key players. The event, held in Suwon, saw India’s top shuttlers struggle against formidable opponents.
HS Prannoy, aged 33, was forced to retire during his match against Indonesia’s Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo. Trailing 5-8, Prannoy suffered an injury after executing a cross-court smash, clutching his right ribs. Despite resuming after a medical timeout, he was visibly uncomfortable and withdrew at 8-16.
Ayush Shetty, India’s lone BWF title winner this season at the US Open Super 300, fell to Chinese Taipei’s Su Li Yang in a 47-minute battle, losing 18-21, 18-21. Kiran George showed resilience but was defeated 14-21, 22-20, 14-21 by Singapore’s former world champion Loh Kean Yew. In women’s singles, Anupama Upadhyaya was outplayed 16-21, 15-21 by Indonesia’s fourth seed and world No. 8, Putri Wardani.

In mixed doubles, Mohit Jaglan and Lakshita Jaglan were overwhelmed 7-21, 14-21 by Japan’s Yuichi Shimogami and Sayaka Hobara. The string of losses marked a challenging day for Indian badminton at the prestigious tournament.
