India’s Yuki Bhambri has scripted a sensational chapter in his career, charging into his first-ever Grand Slam semifinal at the US Open men’s doubles alongside New Zealand’s Michael Venus. The dynamic duo clinched a gripping 6-3, 6-7(8), 6-3 victory over 11th seeds Nikola Mektic and Rajeev Ram in a quarterfinal showdown on Court 17, captivating fans with their relentless energy.
Fresh off their stunning upset of fourth seeds Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz in the pre-quarterfinals, Bhambri and Venus showcased their grit and skill. For the 33-year-old Indian, a former junior world No. 1 and 2009 Australian Open boys’ champion, this marks a career-defining moment after years of battling injuries and shifting from singles to doubles mastery.
The match saw Bhambri’s precision shine early, securing a break in the first set with a pinpoint service return winner against Mektic, paving the way for a 6-3 lead. Despite dropping the second set in a tense tiebreak after Bhambri’s rare double fault, the Indo-Kiwi pair roared back in the decider. A critical break in the eighth game, sparked by Bhambri’s angled backhand, sealed their 5-3 edge. Venus, under pressure while serving for the match, heroically saved five break points to clinch the win when Ram’s backhand return found the net.
