Indian Jiu-Jitsu athlete Rohini Kalam, who won a bronze medal at the 8th Asian Championship in Abu Dhabi, was found dead at her home in Dewas on Sunday, with police suspecting suicide. The 28-year-old, who worked as a martial arts coach at a school in nearby Ashta, was discovered hanging by her sister Roshni upon returning from a temple visit. No suicide note has been recovered, and a detailed investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances.
Rohini’s family reported she had been under significant work-related stress, with colleagues and the school principal allegedly troubling her. Her sister noted changes in Rohini’s phone conversations, indicating mounting pressure. She had travelled home from Ashta on Saturday for a brief visit. On Sunday morning, she had tea and breakfast before speaking on the phone, after which she locked herself in her room. Her father, a retired Bank Note Press employee, and mother were also away at the time of the incident.
The athlete had recently undergone major surgery five months ago and was dealing with lingering health issues. Her father revealed she harboured ambitions of becoming an IPS officer and had been pursuing the prestigious Vikram Award for two years. Despite her achievements on the mat, Rohini faced additional personal strain, including resistance to marriage proposals. Family members believe the combination of professional harassment, health challenges, and unfulfilled career goals contributed to her distress.

Support organisations have urged those facing mental health struggles to seek help, emphasising that suicide is preventable with timely intervention.
