India head coach Gautam Gambhir has stressed the importance of valuing every contribution in a team sport following Sanju Samson’s match-winning 97 against West Indies in the T20 World Cup 2026. Speaking after India’s victory on Sunday, Gambhir said that while big innings often dominate headlines, smaller yet decisive moments — such as Shivam Dube’s late boundaries — are equally critical in shaping outcomes.
Gambhir pointed out that had Shivam Dube not struck two crucial boundaries in the penultimate over, Samson’s 97 might not have received the same recognition. He remarked that for many years, Indian cricket focused primarily on certain standout performances while overlooking the smaller efforts that enable teams to cross the finish line. According to him, cricket remains a team sport where every run, wicket and fielding effort plays a part in determining the final result.
The head coach underlined that this philosophy would define his tenure, stating that as long as he is in charge, every meaningful contribution will receive acknowledgement. He maintained that while a big knock naturally grabs attention, the smaller cameos that tilt the balance are just as significant. Gambhir’s comments reflected his broader emphasis on collective responsibility rather than individual glory within the squad.

In addition to speaking about team culture, Gambhir offered candid views on the growing reliance on data analytics in T20 cricket. He said he does not personally believe in data-driven decision-making and prefers to rely on instinct and experience. While acknowledging that modern teams work closely with analysts, he described data as "overrated", adding that T20 cricket often demands quick judgement calls based on match situations rather than statistical models.
Gambhir also highlighted the versatility within the Indian squad, pointing to bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Varun Chakravarthy as players who can be deployed at different stages of an innings. He emphasised that India’s batting power ensures they are never out of a chase, even in high-pressure scenarios. According to him, having adaptable, world-class players provides the team with strategic flexibility that not all sides possess.
Looking ahead to the semifinal against England at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Gambhir described the opposition as a world-class unit and acknowledged the venue as a challenging one. He expressed hope that India would rise to the occasion and deliver their best performance for the team and the country. With momentum on their side after the win over West Indies, India now face a crucial test as they seek a place in the tournament final.
