Morocco national football team secured a dramatic place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating the Netherlands national football team 3-2 in a penalty shoot-out following a 1-1 draw after extra time in Monterrey on Monday. Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou emerged as the hero by saving the Netherlands' decisive fifth penalty from Crysencio Summerville before Ismael Saibari converted the winning spot-kick to seal Morocco's progression.
The Netherlands appeared to be on course for victory after Cody Gakpo broke the deadlock midway through the second half. The Liverpool forward celebrated emotionally after scoring, having recently shared the personal tragedy of losing his unborn child. However, Morocco refused to surrender and found a dramatic equaliser in first-half stoppage time through Issa Diop, who headed home from a cross by substitute Chemsdine Talbi to force extra time.
Morocco created several of the clearer opportunities throughout the contest. Neil El Aynaoui nearly opened the scoring in the first half with a header that was brilliantly saved by Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. Verbruggen was again called into action moments later to tip over a powerful strike from Achraf Hakimi. At the other end, Bounou produced an outstanding save to deny Micky van de Ven before the interval.

The second half remained fiercely contested, with both teams producing strong defensive displays and physical challenges. Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman introduced Wout Weghorst after the hydration break, and the substitution immediately paid dividends as Weghorst flicked on a long ball that eventually led to Gakpo's opening goal. Just when the Dutch looked set to advance, Morocco struck late through Diop's header to extend the match into extra time.
Extra time produced further drama, with Morocco coming closest to a winner when Soufiane Rahimi was denied by another outstanding save from Verbruggen. The match ultimately went to penalties, where Morocco recovered after missing its opening spot-kick. Bounou's crucial save from Summerville shifted the momentum before Saibari calmly converted the decisive penalty to complete a memorable comeback victory.
The win sends Morocco into the Round of 16, where the Atlas Lions will face Canada national football team in Houston on Saturday. Having once again demonstrated resilience and composure under pressure, Morocco continues its impressive World Cup campaign, while the Netherlands exits the tournament after a heartbreaking defeat in one of the most dramatic knockout matches of the competition.
