The Bangladesh Government has imposed an indefinite suspension on the broadcast and telecast of all Indian Premier League (IPL) matches and related programming, effective immediately. The decision, announced through a directive from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, comes in direct response to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) releasing Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) squad ahead of the IPL season beginning March 26, 2026. The ministry's statement described the BCCI's action as lacking reasonable justification and causing widespread "pain, distress, and anger" among the people of Bangladesh.
The official order highlights the perceived unfairness of Mustafizur Rahman's exclusion from KKR, noting that no clear explanation has been provided for the decision. Until further notice, all IPL content is barred from airing on Bangladeshi television and digital platforms. This marks an unprecedented move by the government against one of cricket's most popular leagues, underscoring the depth of public sentiment and official displeasure in Bangladesh over the matter.
A former BCCI official, speaking anonymously, described the ban as a natural reaction to the events. "For every action, there is a reaction," the official remarked. "Takleef hui hai, so obviously there will be a reaction," referring to the hurt feelings in Bangladesh. However, the official downplayed any significant impact on India or the IPL itself, suggesting that the league's massive global viewership and commercial model would remain largely unaffected by the suspension in one market.

The BCB cited safety and security concerns for its players and supporters as the basis for the demand. The tournament is scheduled to feature venues across both host nations, and any change in allocation would require ICC approval and coordination among stakeholders.
