Indian women’s hockey team forward Deepika has earned a nomination for the prestigious Poligras Magic Skill Award for her breathtaking solo field goal against the world No. 1 Netherlands during the 2024-25 FIH Hockey Pro League. The nominations, announced on Friday, highlight the season’s most spectacular moments, with fans worldwide voting until July 14, 3:29 AM IST, to decide the winner.
The 21-year-old’s defining moment came in February 2025 at Bhubaneswar’s Kalinga Stadium, where India clinched a thrilling shootout victory over the Netherlands after a 2-2 draw. Trailing by two goals in the 35th minute, Deepika dazzled with a solo run down the left flank, weaving past defenders, kissing the baseline, dinking the ball over a defender’s stick, and firing a clinical strike past the goalkeeper. The goal sparked India’s comeback, leading to their triumph in the shootout.
“That goal against the Netherlands is one of the most special moments of my career. Everything just clicked,” Deepika said. “I’m honoured to be nominated and grateful for our fans’ support. Moments like these are what we train so hard for.” She also thanked her coaches, support staff, and teammates for their unwavering encouragement.
